How to hang your frame: tips to get it right

Hanging a picture frame correctly is not only important to keep the picture in place, but it also prevents damage to your artwork, wall and other items in its vicinity. Here we chat about hanging methods and hardware for secure wall fixings so you get an aesthetically pleasing look for years to come.

Top tips:

  1. Level and Mark the Spot: place the level on top of the frame and mark where you’ll hang your frame before drilling or placing hardware. Double-check the measurements and placement before installing any hardware.

  2. Stud Finder for gyprock walls: Finding a stud is helpful for added stability, especially with heavier frames.

  3. wire or d-rings for hanging: .your framed artwork from Three Edge will come with picture hanging wire attached, allowing you to easily hang it by placing the wire over a wall-mounted picture hook. if the artwork is over 1m in width and heavy, it will have two large d-rings attached on either side of the frame and no wire. At three edge we do this so the frame weight is evenly loaded, sits flush on your wall and to avoid it sliding out of position with any knocks and movement. to use this direct hanging method, follow these simple steps: measure the distance between the d-rings and also from the top edge of the frame down to the d-ring. Mark on the wall where the top edge of the frame should be. On the wall, measure the distance from the top of the frame down to your d-ring measurement. Mark these measurements on the wall, starting from the top-edge mark you just made. This tells you how far down to place the screws or hooks. do this for each d-ring. Use a level tool to ensure your marks are level before installing the hooks.

  4. Use Proper Weight-Rated Hooks and Anchors: The most important tip when hanging a picture frame is to use the proper hardware. Always use hardware rated to support the frame’s weight. as professional picture framers, we don’t recommend using temporary command hooks and strips for medium-heavy frames and all glass covered artworks, as adhesives can be unreliable for the weight of a frame. Choosing the right hardware is essential for maximum support and to ensure that the picture remains level and secure.

  5. types of hardware: all hardware is readily available from bunnings, hardware stores and some supermarkets. for gyprock walls, Angle Drive hooks and nails come in a wide variety of pack sizes and load capacities. For solid masonry walls, use a portable masonry drill with a masonry bit to create holes for screws, then insert appropriate plastic wall plugs and secure fastening. For plaster walls, utility hooks are available for lightweight objects.

Following these tips will prevent damage to your wall and the picture, and ensure that it looks aesthetically pleasing. for larger hanging jobs which are tricky to tackle, you could engage the services of a professional picture hanging installer.
